This course is provided in conjunction with the Government Infrastructure and Environment Department and covers the completion of a Safe Work Method Statement, roadwork planning & site setup.
This course can be extended to cover the safe use of portable traffic signals. This extension is necessary for any work requiring temporary traffic lights.

You will receive formal training and assessment in the knowledge and skills provided to assess, plan and set up road works safely. Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to:
- Understand your legal responsibilities towards yourself, others & vulnerable road users
- Plan safe roadworks
- Set out work sites safely in the road
- Carry out accurate risk assessments, control and monitoring of movements on site
- Understand your other responsibilities under current relevant legislation and approved codes of practice
This course meets the statutory requirements of the relevant legislation, whether local or UK, and other relevant statutory provisions and approved Codes of Practice.
Course Information
It's important that the training is enjoyable, relevant and useful. That's why all of our courses are tailored to your needs. The following information is for general guidance, and we are happy to discuss your content, duration, location, certification and cost requirements.
We offer 4 main courses that relate to working in the roadway and many others that also may be needed.
The following courses are suitable for anyone who is working in the road or footway undertaking any maintenance tasks.
- Road safety and sign set up including use of stop and go boards - aimed at everyone working in the roadway and all people working on the roads should have this.
- Use of Portable Traffic Signals – aimed at the manager / supervisor or regular user of PTS.
The following courses are aimed at the people that break up, excavate or reinstate the surface of the road or footways
- Excavation and reinstatement. This is aimed at the person who will break up, excavate and complete reinstatement, but does not include the surface layers. Supervisors and operatives that break up the surface of the road or footway should undertake this training.
- Surface Courses. This is aimed at the person that will attend on site to lay the final surface layers in a reinstatement. Supervisors and operatives that complete reinstatement works in the surface layers of the road or footway should undertake this training.
Not all operatives require all 4 courses, please contact 4safety to discuss your requirements
Managers & supervisors, of people that break up and or reinstate the surface should have all 4
Operatives which only work on surface layers, may only need course 1 and 4
Operatives which only work on excavations, may only need course 1 and 3
Separately courses that may be required including
- Abrasive wheels and silica awareness – for those that use road saws
- Cable Avoidance tools – for the managers / supervisors of those who excavate in the highway to check where services are located
- Excavator and dumper
- Pedestrian or ride on roller
- Hot Box awareness
- Vibration Awareness
- COSHH Awareness
- Sweeper training
- Vehicle Marshal

TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT
The course is delivered through a combination of classroom-based tutorials and practical exercises. You will be assessed through theory and practical tests. All of our trainers are accredited.
4safety can train/assess up to 6 candidates on the course.
As with all of our courses, we ask if the candidates can read and understand English. We can provide a translator for the entire course or just for the theory if necessary, but there is an extra charge and we need to know this at the booking stage.
QUALIFICATIONS / CERTIFICATION
Upon successfully completing the course you will be awarded a 4safety certificate.
